Mind power – Change the content and transform your life!

Why does it feel that our thoughts have a mind of their own, invading our minds without resistance? It feels like a free flow of words, feelings and emotions that we have little or no control over. Have you ever felt that you had no way of stopping these thoughts? If they are positive thoughts that make us feel good or empower us, this is a good thing. But what about those negative, dark thoughts that make us feel terrible and heavy but somehow we just can’t stop thinking them? Do our thoughts just happen? How much control do we really have over them? Is it possible to be intentional with our thoughts, picking and choosing which ones we want and discarding those that leave us overwhelmed, feeling bad about ourselves or heavy hearted?

My first awareness that I could control my thinking was after watching The Secret many moons ago. I remember being blown away by the knowledge  that I could choose my thoughts and that by doing this, I could not only control how I felt but create the life I wanted. This was a huge concept for me at the time but I was desperate for my life to change and would have tried anything. I watched the movie every day and repeated affirmations many times a day and really clung to the  hope that my life would change. I became frustrated because no matter how much I tried or how hard I wanted it, my dominant thoughts were still life is such a struggle and nothing comes easily – as I tried to save my then sinking public relations company. To the outside world I was a successful businesswoman running a chic fashion agency. I sat front row at fashion shows and rubbed shoulders with celebrities. But deep down I was in despair!

Thoughts create everything. But here’s the problem. Most people spend their time thinking about what they don’t want, and then wondering why it shows up over and over again. In The Secret, they referred to this as the 'don’t want' epidemic. When people think, speak, act and focus on what they don’t want, they keep it alive.

I spent my time in meditation trying to think about what I wanted, to feel worthy and to make my business a success but during the day my dominant thoughts were all the reasons to support the belief of my unworthiness and my mind kept showing me evidence of how life really is a struggle. Because I was experiencing this struggle daily, my mind latched onto these as proof that yes indeed, life was a struggle. When I tried to put in the positive beliefs, they were drowned out by my despair that despite my hard work, nothing was ever going to change.

 

You can free yourself of this epidemic by thinking and speaking about what you do want. Your thoughts not only matter, they create matter. Thought is where everything comes from. And your thoughts are where your business comes from. Consciousness is what the universe is made of; matter and energy are just two of the forms that consciousness takes.

 

You’ve heard the old expression, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” But that’s not really how it is. The truth is more like this: “You’ll see it when you believe it.”

Like most people I was struggling with the fact that no matter how much I wanted to be successful in business, every fibre of my being believed the opposite. Try as I might to change this I could not. I believed that I needed things to change externally in order for me to begin to believe my affirmations. Then, I thought, maybe if things start to improve in my life, I could begin to believe the positive words I was saying every day.

Henry Ford said “whether you think you can, or you think you can’t -- you are right”. At this stage I was still believing I couldn’t.

So how do we make a change?  Follow these simple steps by John Assaraf

  • Listen to your thoughts. What are the dominant thoughts that run through your mind?

  • Review your thought list. Is it a list of “don’t wants” or wants? What thoughts do you need to change?

  • Replace your “don’t wants” with wants. When you find yourself thinking of things you don’t want to manifest in your life, interrupt those thoughts and replace them with thoughts about what you do want.

  • Start with a picture, an idea in your mind, and before you know it, you will be living it.

Assaraf concludes by saying: "Thoughts and beliefs are the most powerful force in the universe. Make sure you are cognizant of yours. The secret to your success lies in controlling your thoughts."

 

 

If I feel bad it does not mean that I’ve done something wrong or that its my fault that my life is shitty? It is easy for me to want to blame myself. Understanding how the mind works allows me to be compassionate with myself and begin to use the tools I’ve been given to make a change.
