the kokoda track is one of the most famous war memorials in the world. at the height of world war ii, australian and american forces fought to seize the strategic buru and kokoda islands, which form the key to control of new guinea's western coast. during the campaign, australian army and militia troops led by a young man named bill gammage, crossed the treacherous owen stanley ranges on foot. on kokoda, bill gammage suffered his first and last serious injury. he was hospitalised for months, after being cut on the face by an assassin's blade. then he left hospital and was sent back to the front.
