"Breaking patterns is not about forcing change through empty promises, but understanding the whispers of our past and transforming them into the courage to create a brighter future.”
As the year comes to a close, it's time for a moment of introspection. We often find ourselves caught in cycles of broken promises, with resolutions made and forgotten as quickly as the clock strikes midnight on New Year's Eve. But what if we shift our focus from making promises to breaking the patterns that hold us back?
My experience as a therapist has shown me that the key to lasting change lies in understanding and addressing the underlying causes of our self-sabotaging behaviours.
In my journey of inner child healing, I learned to trust myself and follow through on commitments by recognising and breaking the patterns that kept me stuck.
Tips for Breaking Patterns and Reflecting on Your Year:
Identify Your Patterns: Take a moment to reflect on the past year and notice any recurring themes or situations that left you disappointed or unfulfilled. Are there patterns of procrastination, self-doubt, or toxic relationships? Write them down.
Understand the Root Causes: Explore the possible reasons behind these patterns. Often, they are connected to past traumas or negative beliefs we hold about ourselves. Consider seeking the help of a therapist or counsellor to gain deeper insight.
Practice Self-Compassion: Remember that your past does not define you, and every experience has contributed to the strong, resilient person you are today. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, as you would a dear friend.
Create an Action Plan: Once you've identified the patterns and their root causes, develop a plan to break them. This could include setting small, achievable goals, learning new skills, or forming healthy habits. Celebrate each step forward as a victory.
Create a Strong Support System: Surround yourself with people who uplift, encourage, and inspire you to be your best self. Share your goals and aspirations with them, and ask for their support on your journey.
As we reflect on the past year and look ahead to the next, remember that breaking patterns is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey of personal growth and self-discovery. When we embrace our vulnerabilities and celebrate our strengths, we can create a future that aligns with our desires and values.
